Increasing Evolvability Considered as a Large-Scale Trend in Evolution

چکیده

Evolvability is the capacity to evolve. This paper introduces a simple computational model of evolvability and demonstrates that, under certain conditions, evolvability can increase indefinitely, even when there is no direct selection for evolvability. The model shows that increasing evolvability implies an accelerating evolutionary pace. It is suggested that the conditions for indefinitely increasing evolvability are satisfied in biological and cultural evolution. We claim that increasing evolvability is a large-scale trend in evolution. This hypothesis leads to testable predictions about biological and cultural evolution.

Evolvability is a selectable trait.

Concomitant with the evolution of biological diversity must have been the evolution of mechanisms that facilitate evolution, because of the essentially infinite complexity of protein sequence space. We describe how evolvability can be an object of Darwinian selection, emphasizing the collective nature of the process. We quantify our theory with computer simulations of protein evolution. These s...

Evaluating Software Evolvability

Software evolution is characterized by inevitable changes of software and increasing software complexities, which in turn may lead to huge cost unless rigorously taking into account change accommodations. This has intensified the need on evolvable software systems that can correspond to changes in a costeffective way. Nevertheless, although software evolvability is one of the most important qua...

On somatic constraints in the evolution of multicellularity

The evolution of multi-cellular animals has produced a conspicuous trend toward increased body size in many animal taxa. This trend has introduced at least two novel problems: the elevated risk of somatic disorders, such as cancer, and drastically declining evolvability due to reduced population size, lowered reproduction rate and extended generation time. Low population size has been argued to...

A Simple Model of Unbounded Evolutionary Versatility as a Largest-Scale Trend in Organismal Evolution

The idea that there are any large-scale trends in the evolution of biological organisms is highly controversial. It is commonly believed, for example, that there is a large-scale trend in evolution towards increasing complexity, but empirical and theoretical arguments undermine this belief. Natural selection results in organisms that are well adapted to their local environments, but it is not c...

Some day, these kinds of techniques might be able to test directly whether some of these circuit features underlie the capabilities that we consider peculiarly human. Cognitive capabilities — making judgments, formulating plans, making decisions — may use the same circuit features that are used for sensory proc...
